Best Places to Drive Your Porsche and See Fall Foliage in Westchester County

Fall in Westchester County offers something special for driving enthusiasts. As the leaves begin to turn, roads that wind through wooded hills, historic villages and along the Hudson River become destinations in themselves.

For Porsche owners, autumn can be an especially enjoyable time to get behind the wheel. The goal isn't necessarily to cover as many miles as possible. It is about finding a scenic route, taking your time and enjoying the combination of a great road, a beautiful Porsche and the changing landscape of the Hudson Valley.

From the historic Taconic State Parkway to the back roads of Bedford and Pound Ridge, here are some of our favorite areas for a fall drive from Porsche White Plains.

1. The Taconic State Parkway

Best for: A longer Porsche drive with winding roads, wooded scenery and classic Hudson Valley landscapes.

If there is one road that belongs near the top of a Westchester fall-driving list, it is the Taconic State Parkway.

The Taconic was conceived as a scenic roadway rather than simply a way to get from one destination to another. Its winding, hilly route was designed to work with the surrounding landscape, incorporating stone bridges, wooded sections and scenic vistas. The parkway extends more than 100 miles from Kensico Dam in Westchester County north through Putnam, Dutchess and Columbia counties.

For a shorter Westchester outing, start near Kensico Dam and head north. As you travel beyond the more developed southern portion of the parkway, the landscape gradually becomes more rural.

One particularly memorable section crosses the New Croton Reservoir, where the Taconic passes over the water on the AMVETS Memorial Bridge.

Porsche driving tip

The Taconic is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace. Its curves, hills and narrow sections are part of what makes it scenic, but they also demand attention. Keep the drive about the scenery rather than speed, particularly during peak foliage season when traffic, cyclists, wildlife and other visitors may be present.

For a longer outing, continue north beyond Westchester and make the Taconic the centerpiece of a half-day or full-day Hudson Valley drive.

2. Rockefeller State Park Preserve and Rockwood Hall

Best for: A scenic drive combined with a walk and Hudson River views.

The roads around Rockefeller State Park Preserve in Pleasantville and Sleepy Hollow offer another excellent fall destination.

The preserve encompasses extensive former Rockefeller estate property, with miles of carriage roads, wooded landscapes, open fields, stone bridges and Swan Lake. Scenic Hudson describes the preserve's carriage trails as passing through pastures, around Swan Lake and across stone bridges.

While you cannot drive your Porsche on the preserve's carriage trails, the surrounding roads make a beautiful approach to the area.

For a particularly scenic stop, consider Rockwood Hall, the Hudson River-facing section of the preserve. It offers open lawns, historic estate remnants and views toward the Hudson River and the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Fall is one of the most scenic times to visit.

This is a good destination for a drive where the Porsche is only part of the experience. Park, stretch your legs and spend some time walking through the autumn landscape.

3. Bedford, Bedford Hills and Pound Ridge

Best for: Quiet country roads, stone walls, wooded scenery and a more relaxed local drive.

For Porsche owners who would rather leave the major parkways behind, the roads connecting Bedford, Bedford Hills, Katonah and Pound Ridge offer a completely different experience.

This part of Westchester is known for wooded roads, stone walls, historic properties and rolling terrain. The area surrounding Ward Pound Ridge Reservation is particularly attractive in autumn.

Ward Pound Ridge is Westchester County's largest park and encompasses thousands of acres of woods, meadows, streams and ridgelines. The Town of Bedford also maintains and protects numerous preserves throughout the area.

The drive itself can be the destination. Rather than planning around a single attraction, create a loop through the smaller roads between Bedford, Katonah and Pound Ridge.

A good reason to slow down

This is one of the areas where a Porsche's qualities can be appreciated without driving aggressively. The combination of smooth pavement, gentle curves and changing scenery makes it a natural setting for an unhurried autumn drive.

Be particularly attentive to cyclists, pedestrians, deer and vehicles entering or leaving residential properties.

4. Croton-on-Hudson and Croton Gorge

Best for: Fall color, water views and a short scenic stop.

The Croton-on-Hudson area offers another excellent fall destination, particularly around Croton Gorge Park.

Located at the base of the New Croton Dam, the park provides views of the dam and surrounding landscape. Westchester's tourism organization specifically recommends Croton Gorge Park for fall foliage, noting an easy approximately two-mile walk with views of the New Croton Dam and autumn colors.

The roads approaching Croton-on-Hudson provide plenty of opportunities to enjoy the changing scenery before stopping for a walk.

For Porsche owners, this makes a good shorter outing—particularly if you don't want to spend an entire day on the road.

5. The Hudson River Corridor: Tarrytown to Sleepy Hollow

Best for: Historic scenery, river views and a combination of driving and sightseeing.

The roads around Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow provide another attractive fall destination.

The area combines Hudson River scenery with historic architecture, wooded roads and destinations including Rockefeller State Park Preserve. The nearby Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge provides another impressive Hudson River vista, although it is primarily a transportation route rather than a scenic road in the traditional sense.

For an autumn outing, consider combining a drive through the area with stops at Rockwood Hall, Kingsland Point Park or one of the historic sites nearby.

The result is less of a traditional "driving road" and more of a Porsche day trip—a route that combines good roads with places worth getting out of the car to explore.

6. The Roads Around Yorktown and the Hudson Highlands

Best for: A more adventurous Westchester drive with hills, curves and dramatic scenery.

Northern Westchester offers another opportunity to build a longer fall route.

The roads around Yorktown, Peekskill and the Hudson Highlands become increasingly scenic as you approach the Hudson River. The Taconic State Parkway provides one route through the region, while local roads can be combined with stops at places such as Croton Gorge and the Hudson River waterfront.

One particularly scenic area is the approach toward the Bear Mountain Bridge, where the landscape becomes more dramatic and the Hudson Highlands begin to dominate the scenery.

There are also roadside viewpoints along the route where drivers can safely stop and take in the scenery.

Because some of these roads are narrow, winding and heavily traveled during peak fall weekends, this is another area where a leisurely pace is the best way to enjoy the drive.

7. A Longer Fall Drive: Follow the Taconic North

Best for: A full or half-day Porsche road trip.

If you're willing to venture beyond Westchester County, the Taconic State Parkway provides an easy way to turn a local fall drive into a longer Hudson Valley road trip.

The parkway continues north through Putnam, Dutchess and Columbia counties, eventually reaching Chatham. New York State recognizes the Taconic as a Scenic Byway, and the road's historic design was specifically intended to showcase the surrounding landscape.

A longer itinerary could include:

Porsche White Plains → Kensico Dam → Taconic State Parkway → Croton Reservoir → Putnam County → Dutchess County → return via the Taconic or another Hudson Valley route

The farther north you travel, the more rural the landscape becomes.

For an even longer excursion, continue toward destinations such as Millbrook, Rhinebeck or the Hudson Valley countryside before returning home.

When Is the Best Time to See Fall Foliage?

There isn't one exact date when every part of Westchester reaches peak color.

Because elevation, tree species and weather vary throughout the county, foliage can develop at different rates from one area to another. Generally, the season progresses from northern and higher-elevation areas toward lower elevations.

The best strategy is to watch foliage conditions and plan your drive around the areas showing the most color.

For Westchester, mid-to-late October is often an especially attractive period, although the timing can change from year to year.

And don't overlook the days just before or after "peak" foliage. A mixture of green, yellow, orange and red leaves can create an even more varied landscape.

What Makes a Porsche Ideal for a Fall Drive?

A Porsche doesn't have to be driven hard to be enjoyable.

One of the pleasures of owning a Porsche is being able to choose your own driving experience. A fall drive through Westchester can be about the sound of the engine, the feel of the steering wheel, the changing landscape and the opportunity to spend a few hours away from the usual routine.

Whether you're driving a 911, 718 Cayman, 718 Boxster, Panamera, Macan, Cayenne or Taycan, the vehicle can be part of the experience without becoming the entire focus.

And for Porsche owners who enjoy photography, autumn provides an especially good backdrop.

A quiet country road lined with colorful trees can make an ideal setting for a Porsche photo—provided you park legally and safely.

Planning Your Westchester Porsche Fall Drive

A little preparation can make the day considerably more enjoyable.

Check the weather

Fall weather can change quickly. Check the forecast before leaving, particularly if you're planning a longer route.

Start with a full tank or sufficient charge

If you're taking a longer drive, make sure you have enough fuel or battery charge for the route. This is particularly important on more rural roads where services can be less frequent.

Check your tires

Cooler temperatures can affect tire pressures. Check your tire pressures before a longer drive and make sure your tires have appropriate tread and condition.

Bring a camera

You will probably find several places where you want to stop for photographs.

Watch for wildlife

Deer activity increases in the fall, particularly around dawn and dusk. Give yourself plenty of time to react and be especially cautious on wooded roads.

Don't rush

Some of Westchester's best fall roads are narrow, winding and surrounded by pedestrians, cyclists and residential driveways. The best autumn drive is one you can enjoy without having to hurry.

A Porsche Fall Drive Is About More Than the Destination

One of the great things about living in Westchester County is that you don't have to travel hours to find an enjoyable road and beautiful scenery.

From the historic design of the Taconic State Parkway to the country roads of Bedford and Pound Ridge, the Hudson River views around Sleepy Hollow and the autumn landscape around Croton-on-Hudson, Westchester offers plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy your Porsche.

So this fall, instead of simply looking at the changing leaves, take the long way to see them.

Plan a route, fill up the tank—or charge your Porsche—and spend a few hours discovering some of the roads and landscapes right here in the Hudson Valley.

Drive responsibly. Enjoy the scenery. And let the road be part of the destination.
